The implementation of Artificial Intelligence has the potential to revolutionize the way we work and live. This revolution will be supported by the expansion of Data Centers and the expansion of power generation. The International Energy Agency’s 2024 Electricity Report shows that in the United States, data center power consumption will grow from 200 TWh, 4.5% of U.S. total demand in 2022, to 250TWh and almost 6% of total U.S. demand in 2026. This represents an unprecedented growth in electrical demand not seen since the post-WWII industrial boom. At the same time, utilities and data center owners and operators are actively working to decarbonize energy production and consumption. Nuclear power has the potential to provide firm, dispatchable electricity for data centers, either on the grid or behind the meter.
On July 16th and 17th, Nuclear Beyond Electricity will be holding a workshop at the EPRI office in Washington, D.C., to bring together stakeholders from across the energy landscape for data centers and nuclear power. The workshop seeks to establish a common understanding of each other’s needs and requirements and provide a foundation for further development and collaboration. Opening remarks for the workshop will be given by EPRI’s CEO, Arshad Mansoor, and the workshop will open with overviews of nuclear technologies and data center operations. Industry experts will discuss nuclear siting, nuclear technology selection, nuclear regulations, data center construction, and nuclear data center integration and analysis. Presentations and panel discussions will also include utility perspectives on data center electricity demand growth and data center owner-operators energy demands and requirements. In addition, there will be opportunities for relationship development with stakeholders, data centers, utilities, nuclear developers, and research institutions.
